'The Case for Loving' - Read and Rise June 2021

June 12th is Loving Day, celebrating the landmark case Loving v. Virginia. Richard and Mildred Loving were arrested in 1958 because they were an interracial couple living in Virginia, where it was illegal to marry someone of a different race. The Lovings and their lawyers argued that interracial marriage laws were unlawful and based on slavery laws and white supremacy. 9 years later, on June 12, 1967, the Lovings won their case in the Supreme Court.

I absolutely adore this quote from the Netflix show, Anne with an E

Love doesn't look the same for everyone. It can come in so many forms. And how can there be anything wrong with a life if it's spend with a person you love?
That's exactly the philosophy I want to pass on to my children and it is the perfect quote both for Loving Day and for Pride Month. We may never achieve a country completely devoid of racism and prejudice, but I will take opportunities like this to remind my children that we CAN make progress, we just have to continue fighting for what's right and make sure we treat everyone with love and respect.

Featured story: "The Case for Loving" by Selina Alko and Sean Qualls (I'm very grateful that this interracial couple decided to collaborate and create this book for children!)

Activity: Think about family or friends whose families have been impacted by this Supreme Court Case and appreciate that they are able to live freely and happily with the ones they love.

I wish each and every one of you a life filled with people you love <3
