'Who Says Women Can't Be Doctors?' - Read and Rise March 2025
Next up for Women's History Month is Elizabeth Blackwell. Now this is a women most of you have probably heard of but I thought she was important enough to mention because, can you imagine a world where women are NOT doctors?? I can't, but it did exist! And I'm forever grateful to Elizabeth Blackwell for opening up that door for all the women who followed after her.

When Lil C was itty bitty, Disney Junior launched a new show called "Doc McStuffins" featuring a little girl who fixes toys, with the help of her four toy best friends. Spoiler: she has a magical stethoscope that brings all the toys to life (which makes it all the more fun!). Throw in a lot of catchy songs and the show was amazing. It inspired so much pretend play (and toy purchases, I'm not gonna lie) and when they expanded to create a pet rescue, Lil C became more invested because animals are her true love. Even though Lil C has no interest in being a doctor - or a vet - I'm glad she grew up never once thinking that a career as a doctor wasn't for her because she's a girl. She knows it's not for her because she doesn't like blood and needles and sicknesses and gross bodily stuff. But at the end of the day, Doc McStuffins wouldn't have existed if it weren't for Elizabeth Blackwell paving the way.

Activity: encourage your little ones to pretend play doctor! Pretend play is such an important part of growing up. Not only is it a fun way to learn about a wide array of topics, but it helps children use their creativity and develop social and emotional skills. You can read more about it here in "The Power of Pretend Play for Children" from the Child Mind Institute.
Doctor Pretend Play from How Wee Learn has many ideas for DIY doctor tools you can make and incorporate into your play at home.
And since I mentioned Doc McStuffins, I couldn't end this without sharing the DIY Doc McStuffins Doc-Mobile I made for Lil C once upon a time!
